I am trying to design an image in photoshop to use on my web site. Its of a curled page. I have managed to design the curl and added some text. I saved the image using the save for web and saved it as a jpeg. Now when I bring the image into the web site (the background on my web site is a pattern I found on the internet) I get the white square background of the image showing. I have tried erasing the part I don’t want, and I have tried extracting it. But as soon as I convert it to a jpeg the background white shows. I know I am missing something really basic here, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get around this.

Correct.
You need transparency to create a non-rectangular image. JPEG does not support transparency.

Depending upon your image, GIF may be the best solution.
