I’m working in XP with PS6, making an image that is 36" x 60" at 300dpi. The file saves in at about 3 gigs. Unfortunately, when I click on the file to open it, a dialogue box for ‘new file’ opens with the same dimensions as the original file (i.e. 36×63 @300 dpi).

The properties of the file reads as a PS file at 3.5 gigs, but said image will not open, only a new file opens in it’s place.
Having read thru the other topics, I find the psicon.dll issue i have can be resolved, but having fixed that, why can’t i open my file?

Help!

PS 6.0 had a file size limit of 2 gigs. Unfortunately it would let you save a larger file but won’t open it.

PS CS has introduced a new file format that can go larger but I don’t think it will be able to read your old file.

well, thanx for the reply, but can anything be done to retrieve my original file? without buying a new program?
And if i have to re-do the image, how would I keep it under 2 gigs? (i relaise you probably need to know more about the file, but broad suggestions would help)

I have no solution at all for you. I don’t even think that CS will open it. But check back. Someone else may be able to help. I simply don’t use files that large.

Why are you working at 300 ppi? Chances are you will be able to get away with much less. Working somewhere in the 100-150 ppi range will give you a small enougb file that you won’t have problems with the 2Gb limit (unless you add too many layers/alpha channels)

rob,

Photoshop CS may be able to open your large psd image – download the free 30 day tryout and give it a try. If it is able to open the image, you’ll want to follow Renee’s advice to decrease the size as CS cannot save PSDs over 2G.

Stephanie, doesn’t the big files have a new extension (.psb) in PSCS? rom, you may need to activate the big files function in PSCS…

since a flattened uncompressed file of that size would contain about 800MB worth of 4-channel pixels, he must have added a lot of layers/channels
