Can someone tell me how to get a 16-bit image from an HP 7450C scanner into Photoshop. HP claims it can be done but cannot tell me how.

That’s the ONE thing I dislike about most HP software, especially for scanners. They bury the control over the unit under a "easy to use" interface.

The answer is most likely, you’ll have to check the HP manual for how to set it to scan at that depth, or call their tech support.

Once it’s scanned at that depth, be it via twain or standalone software, photoshop will open it.

Actually, if you’ll do Google Groups search for that scanner, especially in comp.periphs.scanners, I’m not sure you CAN get 16 bit output from that baby, except on Macintosh.

There are a couple of models that are that way. Not totally positive that is one of the ones with the basic marketing lie or not. Canon has some models that marketing tricks you into believing you are getting USB 2.0 highspeed capabilty, but you’re not, so HP isn’t the only liar here.

If I have the models mixed up, please forgive; but I think the gist of it is that if the HP software won’t save as 16 bit file, it won’t output 16 bit via TWAIN either. To further confuse the matter, I think VueScan WILL output 16 bit from one of these HP scanners with the built in lie, but doesn’t work with the other model (or some such).

Only one thing?

Point taken Scott, but I wouldn’t want to call anyones child ugly so-to-speak.

For example, I HATE HP Printers for graphics work, BLUDVLZ uses them all the time, and he’s a smart cookie. So… I wouldn’t condem someone elses choice, even though it’s not my preference. <smile>.
