Hello,

I bought my daughter a Wacom tablet for Christmas and I’m wondering if anyone knows of any good books that help to learn how to use the tablet with Photoshop. She is a budding artist and I’d really like for her to learn how to use this wonderful tool and application properly. Unfortunately right now she’s just getting frustrated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It’s not using the tablet with Photoshop pre say. It’s getting used to use the tablet instead of a mouse for finer control. Just practice with it in all programs. That’s how I became better at using mine. Normally I keep my left hand on the keyboard for shortcuts when working in Photoshop.

Lisa its great to get that creativity flowing 🙂 Try this: ISBN 1929685149 and I might even look into it myself.

Amazon < http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/1 929685149/customer-reviews/103-9809525-2141422>

Being a 2001 release I’m uncertain if it covers the functionality of the latest Intuos 2 yet, other than the soon to be released Photoshop CS Bible which should have something regarding added CS functionality one would think, there’s nothing other I know of.

Possibly see what the publishers say as, it may be a lead for you too.

Regards,
Adam.

Just going to the Wacom site will provide a good collection of Hands-On Tutorials that will get her acquainted with the tablet and provide materials for her to practice creating with.

That book looks to be quite limited in usage, providing a very generalized usage, with more of an overview of all the various types and how they are used. I own an AceCad in addition to my Wacom, and although somewhat similar, they are different enough from each other, and some of the other brands discussed in the online excerpt that I would hold very stong doubts about that book being any more informative for my AceCad as it would be for my Wacom…

Author Site <http://www.iril.no/gts_whatis.htm>

I don’t vouch for negativity nor reading books by their covers especially when someone in searching for advice for their young ones.

A little searching for review came up with this from the author’s website with much more detail at the link Lisa, for you to research on. Seems quite an interactive text but at least some more info for you:

June 2002: The book is presented on the Wacom homepage (US) Take a look!

11-01: "Drawing Cartoon Characters with a Graphics Tablet" from the book is published at the PSP Power website and in their newsletter for November. Take a look!

On these pages, you’ll find everything promised in the book: downloadable files so you can follow the examples, and updated links and information about Graphics Tablets and more.

For those of you unfamiliar with the book, I have written a page about it (What is GTS?), and made several sample pages and a sample chapter available as PDF files which I hope you will enjoy.

There’s also information here about how to order the book (please do!) and if you have any questions, please contact me by e-mail or contact the publisher: Muska & Lipman Publishing.

Not in my wildest dreams – and they can be pretty wild – did I ever imagine I’d write a book. Thanks to the initiative of Andy Shafran at Muska & Lipman, not only have I written a book, but I’ve also discovered just how fun writing really is. I sincerely hope you’ll get as much pleasure from reading it as I had writing it.

Enjoy! 😉 Iril

Thank you very much for the replies. I will look into that book Adam. That’s exactly what she wants to do. She is very good at cartoon illustrations and wants to be able to take what she draws by hand and enhance it with Photoshop. Right now she’s working on a drawing of a young girl in an ROTC uniform and the girl has angel wings. She wants to be able to color the angel wings red white and blue.

I really appreciate the help.

Lisa, that’s great. For Illustration work you may want to eventually add Illustrator CS to the stable and as the second poster here stated, practice counts for everything (especially learning the vector pen tool which will also be of great benefit to your daughter as her interest grows – learning it early will certainly hold her in great stead over those who fear it).

Thing is, there is practice and there is fun practice. I think that the practice that comes from pure creation, is the most fun practice there is had to be 🙂

Sites like <http://www.photoshopcafe.com/> are very hands-on and geared to those wishing to learn, ask for feedback and show their work. Seems like a very college-centric age group but some very experienced working folk looking after the site too. It is headed by the author and PS expert Colin Smith.
