People,

(Running v6.0) I have an old B & W photo that a family member wants colorized.

Is this accomplished manually (meaning…vs. a plug-in)?

Any good tutorials around?

Thanks very much,

If you mean only toning the print, go to Hue Sat and check colorize.

Mark,

If you mean hand-tinting then that is an entirely manual job. Mode change to RGB and paint in colour mode

It’s been a while, but I think the way to do it is create layers on top of the BW photo and set the layer mode to color and just paint over the photo on separate layers. Then you can adjust it by setting the opacity. There’s a good tutorial in the PhotoShop 6 Wow book.

I wrote a tutorial (sort of like the one described by tburke, above), which might help: Black & White to Color < http://user.fundy.net/morris/redirect.html?photoshop24.shtml>

Or if you are not a good painter you can make selections, and then use a hue\sat adjustment layer, and click the colorize box. I prefer that method myself, becasue when you are all done you can then adjust the opacity of the layer for a realistic look.

If you decide to go the painting route, you should also do that on its own layer so you an edit it, or play with the opacity.

Or have a look at <http://www.black-and-white-to-color.com>. I’ve not tried this but it looks very interesting.

I have seen the replace color tool in Photoshop CS and it looks interesting. I have a feeling that it will kill most technique in colorizing a b/w photo.
