downloaded some images from my canon powershot. i opened them in photoshop 7, cropped them, filled in with black and white and saved them in a new file. when i try to reopen them, either through photoshop or directly through the file, the computer shuts down and reopens without the files. when i try to open through photoshop, photoshop shuts down. the last time i tried to open them i got an error message: explorer.exe-application error: the instruction at "0x77f583a1" referenced memory at "0x022ff075′. the memory could not be ‘written".

deleted the original cropped files and tried again by opening the photo image files, performing the same cropping and filling operations. saved the files in a new folder with a new name and got the above error message.

have windows xp. i have had no other trouble using photoshop in conjunction with xp. in fact, i was able to do other operations with the original cropped files. i made new images by combining the files and these new combined images still open.

Smoothmoon,

the computer shuts down <<

Under XP that indicates a hardware, O/S or BIOS problem. Applications cannot cause a complete system crash under XP, Win2k or NT.

It could be bad RAM, HDD or HDD cables/EIDE Controller, or a processor gone bad.
