I am very curious if its possible to have adobe print sequencal numbering on your template where you want it when you print. Example: Lets say I have a PSD file and its a certificate. I want to number the certificates so they can be redeemed. 001 002 003 004 etc.etc.etc… Does this require a plugin ? Please any help would be great.

My email is btw… this is for Adobe photoshop

This can be done with pagination programs, like Pagemaker or InDesign. I know of no way of doing it in Photoshop.

Photoshop, alone, can’t do what you want, John. You’d need to create a separate document for each certificate number in the series.

If you have a lot of these to do, you should talk to a print shop. They’ll suggest a couple options, depending on whether they’re full color or not. Commercial networked laser printers, like the Xerox DocuTech/DocuPrint series systems can do this. Also, many print shops have separate machines that do sequential numbering on documents after they’ve been printed on conventional offset presses. Neither of these options will be cheap, especially if you’re just doing a small number of certificates.

There are ways to do sequential numbering on a home printer, but it involves setting up a data merge function in a page-layout application.

Are you advanced enough, skills-wise, and do you have the proper software to tackle this?

If so, I—or someone else here—can provide or direct you toward more specific information.

Give us a better idea of what you want for the final product. This will help focus the answers on what you need to do.

If you have Acrobat Pro 6, you can save these certs to PDF and use pagination commands in Acrobat to do it as it prints, but basically, it’s an inelegant solution.

Point is, as was mentioned, not from within photoshop.

These are basically just coupons that are going to be redeemed. But there has to be a card count on them for accountability reasons. I have plenty of software at my disposal for sure I have PageMaker. I am not going to be printing over 500 so a commercial printer is not an option at this point. I am using an Hp DeskJet 5150. I had no Idea that you could do sequential numbering on a home printer. That was a
A nice tip. Phosphor what do you mean by proper software? And Don McCahill that might be an option of I can’t get my printer to do what I want. I am savvy at a computer so following instructions inst a problem… I just hope I can find a solution so I don’t have to print each one, one at a time … Bla 🙂

Thanks fellas.

Do they have to start with a specific number? How many characters do the numbers have to be?

That will drive whether or not you can use pagination commands. If you have MS Pub, or any other program that will do a mail merge, you can set up a spreadsheet with your numbering system, and then insert that field into the doc and tell it to mail merge, using the spreadsheet as the data source.

Just a thought.

John…By proper software, I meant just what you’ve now revealed that you have, i.e.: Pagemaker. That will do what you want.

Problem is, I’ve never used Pagemaker for any data merging; I’ve never had any jobs where I needed to learn how to do it, so (and I feel a little sheepish about this) I can’t tell you how to do it.

BUT, I can point you toward the Pagemaker Forum. If you ask there you should get a good answer. If not there, try the Indesign forum; there are users there who have upgraded from Pagemaker and will know hopw to do what you want in Pagemaker. And keep checking back on this thread. There are plenty of folks who visit regularly and have done this and who WILL be able to provide you with better info.

The reason I replied is to draw out more information from you about the details of your project and to let you know that Photoshop is not the way to go for your project.

If you have Pagemaker, here is the trick. You make the entire coupon on master pages. Lets say you want to have 10 coupons per page (you can make it work with other numbers, but 10 is easy to understand).

On the master page, place everything. For the ticket number, place a pagenumber, and then the number 0 on the first ticket, 1 on the second, 3 on the third … etc. Then make a 50 page document using these master pages. The first will come out with numbers 10 to 19, the next with 20 to 29, etc up to 500 to 509. (If you need the first 9 numbers, then make a page up for those separately.)

It works, I have done it.

Yes they have to start with a specific number. Like 1179. 1180. 1182… The spreadsheet is an interesting idea…

I am going to take the route thats easy for sure. Unless I have no choices.

`Chewing on it…

With that added information, all you will have to do is change the page starting number to the desired point.

Everyone thankyou for your help. I think I might go with Don McCahill suggestion. I was even thinking about using a spreadsheet and just running the prints through a second time. Guys thanks alot and if something else comes up please let me know.

You guys are great here 🙂

Perhaps this is too simplistic a solution, but it seems to me a more elegant (and accessible) answer lies in ImageReady’s "variables" and "data sets". For more information, read the ImageReady help file on "Creating templates for data-driven graphics (ImageReady)". Not only can you create data-driven images, you can also automate file generation.
