Before I did a system re-install I’ve never encountered this problem

I usually do my grayscale conversion with convert to B&W plug-in, hence the image mode stays in rgb unless I convert it. I usually do this as a matter of economy as grayscale images use less space. I’ve never had any problems with this until now.

When I convert an image – ‘image/mode/grayscale’ there is no change I can see while the image is in Photoshop. When I open it in an image viewer (irfanview or thumbs plus) it looks different, lighter or darker than tye rgb version, depending on the grayscale setup in PS colour setting. I’ve tried using a few different setting, e.g. dot gain 20% but I’m getting lost.

Can someone set me straight please.
