What’s the trick to getting an image in Photoshop CS (WinXP platform) to zoom using the mouse wheel? All I can get the wheel to do is scroll the image up and down. I’ve tried holding down ALT, activating the zoom tool, waggling the Navigator zoom slider back and forth to "wake up" the scrolling mouse wheel, all to no avail. I must be missing something, I know this is possible. Please enlighten me. Thanks.

Try the combinations below:

Keyboard Shortcut Result
Mouse wheel scroll canvas up / down one pixel
Shift-mouse wheel scroll canvas up / down one page
Ctrl-mouse wheel scroll left / right one pixel
Ctrl+Shift-mouse wheel scroll left / right one page
Alt-mouse wheel zoom in / out in 10% increments
Alt+Shift-mouse wheel zoom in / out in 100% increments

Thanks for the reply. I’ve tried all of those, to no avail. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s a mouse setup issue.

Mine is standard ol’ Logitech MouseWheel (M-S48), with standard Windows drivers (not MouseWare). Windows XP/SP1, Photoshop CS.

IBM USB optical mouse here, standard settings, XP/SP1, CS. The mouse software has an option on the "wheel" tab to "enable universal scrolling," which is checked. Other option there is "use Microsoft Office 97 emulation scrolling only" and I’ve tried that setting also. No dice.

Mike, Trevor’s ALT tip works for me but my MS Wireless Mouse zooms with the wheel straight off. If ever zooming stops, all I need to do is click on the navigator zoom line, give it a slight drag sometimes – and the mouse zoom "wakes" up again.

The only thing I can’t do is have the window size incrase when the document zoom fills its window. I’ve been officially told here, that this isn’t a feature.
