I want to use PS CS’s "PDF Presentation" to make a *screen res* portfolio. Should I set up the images at screen res in sRGB when I prep the files in PS CS? I know that files are sometimes resampled during PDF conversion, and some programs like Acrobat let you control these parameters. BTW, this would only be viewed on a computer monitor.

Id like to keep images at screen res and *untagged* in sRGB, if possible. Is there a set-up/parameters menu in PS CS for PDF Presentation output? If the input images are Adobe RGB 1998, will selecting sRGB result in conversion to sRGB? Or should I convert to sRGB in PS CS before I execute the PDF Presentation command? And is there a way to turn *off* profile embedding?

Thanks,
Paul

The only way to do a PDF slide show is at screen resolution. The feature has a major bugs that doesn’t allow resizing to actual image pixel dimensions and if your images are smaller than screen resolution, they will be seen pixelated. And you can’t reset the file to open at 100 percent of image size because it breaks the javascript and won’t run.

So you have to prepare the images at full screen resolution for the larges monitor resolution you anticipate anyone viewing it on. Then they might be resized down which will probably look OK, but not up.

Hopefully the next release will allow you to set the opening size parameters so you can actually use web size images and not have them spread across a large monitor and appear pixelated. It would make for a more professional presentation.

Thanks Larry. I agree – we need more control over the parameters. This is such a step backwards from Acrobat (distiller type settings), but Im happy that Adobe is including it with PS CS. PDF is wonderful, and I think that many will use it from PS CS if there is more control, and the features are better documented. I read the Manual and Help files – zippo on file set-up recommendations and output specs.

At this time, the feature is unusable to me – I cant run the risk with my portfolio being pixellated.

Thanks again,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Just to be clear, when you create a PDF Presentation your images are not resampled. If your images are 400 x 300 pixels for example, that is what will be written to the PDF file.

What you will see is that if your images are smaller (or larger) than the monitor’s screen dimensions, the Reader will scale the image to fill the screen; this is what Larry is referring to. If you stop the slide show by hitting Esc, you can verify that your images are correct, and have not been resampled up or down.

Note that this only affects presentations (slide shows), which include a simple JavaScript to advance pages using a timer, and assumes you want to display in full screen mode. If you choose "multi-page document" rather than "presentation" in the PDF Presentations option dialog, this JavaScript is not written to the file, and the resulting PDF document will open at whatever zoom level the user has chosen as his default.

Since few users have monitors running at higher than say 1600 x 1200, if your source images are that size or greater, they should appear fine most of the time. That is, you should design your PDF Presentation for the highest monitor resolution you expect your users to have.

Hope this helps,

Paul,

Thanks! Your provided the details that I needed & thanks for the accurate info on the "scaling," and I appreciate your distinction from resampling.

Excellent – you answered my next question 😉 PDF is amazing, and Im so happy to see the PS sharing these Adobe "family" features. I hope that the PDF Presentation and output will continue become richer with future versions.

My thinking hat is starting to smoke — a good sign =))

Cheers,
Paul

One other question: if I want sRGB output from PDF Presentation, must I set up my pages in that color space?

I can I turn off embed profile in the "distilling" stage, or must I do that beforehand in PS CS?

Thanks,
Paul
