I transferred a digital pic (2592 pixels X 1944 pixels) from my Canon G5 to Photoshop. Photoshop opens it at 180 dpi. I converted to 300 dpi (4320 pixels X 3240 ) for printing and manipulation and when I save as a high quality JPEG it says the file is approx. 8 megs . When I re-open it in Photoshop it says the file is Doc: 40m/40m. Could someone please explain this to me?

4320×3240 yields 13.348 Meg. But that’s for 1 channel (red, green or blue), so all 3 will be 40 Meg.

You saved it as JPEG. There will be image compression. How much depends on numerous factors (the software, image structure, etc.).

when clicking image-image size make sure

Resample is UNchecked, this will change the original pic size without changing image file quality (you can type in the desired size and it will do the dpi automatically go fo at least 300Dpi if you can more is better increaseing DPI or as it is called in the Image size box pixels/inch will decrease the print size of the pic.
