This morning I started getting errors and it would not open any files. Says it is either not a valid Photoshop document or is not the right kind of document.

Help appreciated.

We need more information. Are they PSDs?

Photoshop opens a lot of different file types, so we would need to know exactly what’s happening, in order to be most helpful. For the sake of example, trying to drop a MS WORD doc into photoshop would produce the same error message, but that wouldn’t mean anything is wrong.

PSD, DCR, TIFF,JPEG.

In other words, everything. Nothing opens and everything gives me some sort of error.

First thing to try is trashing your prefs. Details in the FAQs.

Sorry to say – nothing.

It may be that the directory where all my working photos has become corrupted. I tried an arbitrary jpeg elsewhere and it opened. This still is a Photoshop problem because that is the only program that ever opens this directory.

Now – how do I recover these images? They are visible as thumbnails. They appear correct in attributes and size in Explorer. This is extremely serious as some of these images have no current backup.

Photoshop problem because that is the only program that ever opens this directory.

That doesn’t mean it’s a photoshop problem. It is entirely possible you have a hard drive issue. Run Scandisk.

It is possible that the files are corrupted. After running scandisk, go and find the free program IrfanView. It will allow you to view the files and optionally save them (as tiff e.g.). Then you can try those.

Peace,
Tony

No luck.

I can see the thumbnails in Photoshop. Is there another way to recover the images. This is extremely important and I do not believe it is a random corruption of just my Photo directory. The hard drive is clean.

I appreciate the help but I need some serious help from Adobe. I cannot have my images corrupted. Too important and I don’t know what to do.

No luck.

What does that mean? Are you saying that you ran scandisk and it didn’t help? Are you saying that you tried IrfanView and saved them as a tiff and they still didn’t open?

This is extremely important and I do not believe it is a random corruption of just my Photo directory. The hard drive is clean.

It doesn’t matter what you believe or don’t believe. It is a matter of trying to eliminate variables that can produce the errors you’re seeing.

If you didn’t try scandisk because you don’t believe it, then it isn’t that important.

I appreciate the help but I need some serious help from Adobe.

This is a USER forum. If you need help that users with YEARS of experience in photoshop and with computers cannot provide you, pony up bucks and give ’em a call. You’ll get tech support.

Have you even tried any of the suggestions given yet?

#1 – Trash your preferences.

#2 – ren scan disk

#3 – get the free irfranview and see if you can open the images

After you do these three things, if you still are having problems, come back and we will go to the next step… or are you waiting for someone to magically reach through your computer and doo it for you?

I do not appreciate being flamed. This is difficult enough and I do not understand the necessity of these childish comments.

Yes, I have tried all the simple steps. Scandisk, Irfanview, trashed the preferences. If it was simple I wouldn’t be asking for help (or reaping needless abuse).

I am experimenting with a program I found called Media Recover. Not sure yet – it takes a while to run.

Is that directory by any chance over a network? If so, what happens if you copy those files locally and then try to open?

Sorry about the flame, but a conversation by its nature is two way and we need feedback and comp[lete info to help you!

Sherwin,

It wasn’t a flame. You are not answering the questions we are asking. We have no idea what your competency is, and therefore cannot tell if you are eliminating the suggestions based on having tried them, or if it is because you don’t think they are relevant.

As Vi said, it’s a two way street.

For example, we said, try IrfanView. What happened? Were you able to see the images in IrfanView? That tells us more information.

But when you blow us off by not even giving the courtesy of answering the questions, or giving feedback on the results of what you have tried, then you should not expect us to just keep stabbing at possibilities, and SHOULD expect a little "pushback" in terms of replies.
