Hi,
I’m perfoming live visuals in clubs with ArKaos VJ. It can read a lo of movies formats simultaneously, display input devices (camera acquisition board) and provides a lot of effect you can control i realtime. For those who don’t know, try it, it’s very efficient, eas and exciting !! (arkaos.net)
My question is: there is a great AsciiArt effect in the software tha works in real time. It replaces the visuals by a lot of littl textures, with a lot of presets (the most used is ascii chars) & ca also use your own picture as textures input. Is there a similar plugi for Photoshop ??
Have a look here for a thread about the effect (previews at the botto of the page): http://www.vjforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=4011 Thanks for any help !

For a still image in PS to have a similar effect, you could type the characters and create a Pattern. I’d probably go in and do a little " embossing" or similar to create the look of relief in the image, then you can Save Pattern, to be used in PS. From there it could be used in a lot of ways. You could also capture a brush from your choice of ASCII characters and paint with that.

Painter (older Fractal Design versions) had a "paper" that was similar could be used to create this effect where ever you wished, by using many of the brushes that produced a grain effect from the chosen paper. I don’t recall seeing this particular paper in newer versions, but it could be imported from an older ver, and probably downloaded from many Painter sites. I made several using only 1’s and 0’s in various strings, then embossed the characters to appear as though one was looking at lead type, or the working end of a typewriter key.

Hope this helps,
