Hello,

I’m having some difficulty using the "Save As" function in PS 7. I created a document, and saved it as a PSD. Then I needed to save it as a JPG, so I tried "Save As". After specifying where I wanted to save it, and changing the file type to JPG, I clicked the "Save" button, and received the following error:

Could not save a copy as "[inserted location and file name]" because that document is currently open. Save using a different name, or close the document and try again.

I tried using a different file name, and also tried closing the document, opening it again, and trying "Save As" again. Nothing worked. The odd thing is, I’ve created several documents yesterday and today and successfully saved them as JPG’s without any problem.

Any ideas?

Jonathan

Commonly reported problem, adobe can’t reproduce it.

Two answers:

Rename the psicons.dll – that will solve the issue but your PSD files will no longer have the little photoshop Icon next to them to indicate their association; they will stil be associated with photoshop.

MY workaround is…

In the history palette, make a new document from the current state (button at the bottom of the palett). Close the original. Close any other open images in Photoshop.

Works for me every time.

Thanks for your answer. Actually, after I posted my first message, I kept trying to figure out a way to fix the problem. I remembered that I had installed a new plugin designed to help optimize JPG files for web viewing. I hadn’t noticed the problem before installing the plugin, so I deleted it, and haven’t had the problem since then. Hopefully that will solve it. If not, I’ll try your solution.

Thanks!

I believe it was produced by a company called BoxTop. The plugin was called something like "ProJPEG". As I mentioned before, it was designed to improve optimization for web images. You can probably find more info by doing a Google search for BoxTop.

Hope that helps!

Hi Jonathan,
There is no need to use Pro Jpeg as Photoshop’s Save For Web can do just as well or better at creating optimized Jpegs. I built a jpeg comparison web site when Photoshop 5.5 was introduced:
<http://imagecompress.com>
It compares 20 different graphics programs and their ability to create compressed jpegs. On the comparison page you can actually compare the Jpeg created by ProJpeg to Photoshop at both 100% and 300% to see the jpeg artifacts.

I’ve tried off and on for the past year and found that Boxtop Software isn’t reachable. Their web site seems to be gone:
<http://www.boxtopsoft.com>

Hi Larry,

That seems odd that you can’t reach their site. I downloaded the plugin not more than two or three months ago. In any case, I wasn’t exactly impressed either. I had heard it recommended by some webmasters, so I decided to try it out. I had been told that you could achieve the same quality with ProJPEG as with PS, but with much smaller file sizes. From my experience, though, that just wasn’t the case. Now I just use the "Save for web" exclusively, and have started playing with the Unsharp Mask as well for better results. (I don’t do much web work, so this is all kind of new to me.)

Hi All,
I have had this error happen a number of times, but very randomly. I have no plug-ins installed and normally only have Illustrator and Outlook opened when it has occured. Could it be something other than a plug-in?
Thanks
Shaun
