Problem with Batch processing

I want to create thumbnails from plenty of pictures. I created new action – Image Size, Sharpen and Save for web (quality 25). Everything works very good when I try to process just one image (size of the file is about 1kB). But when I try to apply it to more pictures by batch, it resizes and sharpens this pictures, but final size is between 12 and 20 kB. Does anybody know, where is the problem?

This is not a problem.

Different images will compress differently, causing different file sizes.

Image compression is a compromise between quality and file size. You can use Save For Web and set it for a target file size but I recommend judging the compression of each image on it’s own so you make sure they will look good.

Sorry, I probably badly descripted my problem – when I apply the action descripted above on the picture – e.g. Img01.jpg, the final size is about 1 kB and the compression rate is about 18. But when the same picture is part of some batch, the final size is almost 20 kB and the compression rate is maximally 1.5. It looks that Photoshop ignores the compression but only when I use the batch.

Beer,

Look in the action steps. What does the quality say for the Save For Web Params in the steps in the palette?

Quality 25
I used the same action in both cases described above

You’ve probably already gone through this exercise a number of times, so I just want to make sure I understand it.

You’ve created an action that includes SFW and saves as a jpg. When you perform the action, that is, run the action on a single (open) file, you get a result that is some size in KB, let’s say "X". However, if you run a batch, on that exact same file, using the same action, the resulting file size is some value other than "X"?

I know it sounds stupid, but I’m curious. Have you run the action in batch mode and used only a single image to ensure that it is the batch mode causing the discrepancy? I’m sure you’ve run it on the same folder, which includes the image in question, but have you run the batch on the single file?

Can you run that action outside of batch on the same image more than once and still get exactly the same file size? If you run it in batch, on a single image, do you get the same file size – albeit different from the one performed by hitting the action button?

It’s a curious situation you’re reporting. Maybe we can get to the bottom of it.

Peace,
Tony

I reply Yes to all your questions:

Yes, when I run the batch (even on single image), I obtain file much bigger file than when I run action on this single picture.

Yes, when I run the action on the same image outside of batch more times I always obtain the right (smaller) size of the file.

Yes, when I run this action on image more times in a batch, the size is always the same (but bigger than by run the action button).

I´m really confused of this

Uhm… You win the prize, man. I’m with you – confused.

What happens if you don’t sharpen the image? Just resize and SFW. I’m going to set it up and run some tests also. There HAS to be an explanation.

What version of Photoshop are you using?

Peace,
Tony
