I had an EOS Digital Rebel which was drowned (long story) and I could upload my RAW files and adjust them in CS without any problem. I uninstalled the Canon Digital Rebel because it was irrepairable and got a 10 D to replace it. I installed the software because I run WIN 2K pro. Now I cannot open a RAW file into Photoshop CS. The files aren’t corrupted because I can use the Canon utilities to see them and alter them, but I wanted CS because I would be able to manage the RAW files right there. Is there a known problem? I tried the new RAW filter from Adobe and that made the problem worse. The Canon drivers are the latest ones and I have the latest firmware. Please if you have any idea of what has happened, email me. I don’t want to use another format. I want to upload RAW for the ability to have all the data associated the image.

I have a custom dual P3 with a gig of RAM and had no problems before adding my new camera. I can still open the RAW digital Rebel files without any difficulty.

I will try to reach Canon as well. What a nightmare, first a fall into a swamp drowned the Rebel…NOW this!

Hello Trudy,
While I can’t offer you any expert advice, perhaps passing along my method of troubleshooting will be of some good. As an owner of a Canon EOS 10D and since I’m using Photoshop CS, I can attest to the fact that I don’t think the problem lies with the camera or it’s native RAW files. I’ve always done my own troubleshooting and most times am able to sort through similar troubles. My advicen or should I say method of attack would be to uninstall your camera software and Photoshop CS. Re-install CS first and then make sure to re-install the 10D software, be sure that the twain driver etc. is properly installed and that you are in fact using the 10D software CD and not the one from the Rebel (an easy mistake to make as I’ve done similar myself.) It would seem to me that if you can open the files in Canon’s utility software then that would suggest the files aren’t corrupt and that the problem likely lies in your other software. Many times over the years I’ve been able to resolve computer problems by simply uninstalling and reinstalling the offending software. Hope my advice helps and in case you’ve already done that, oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Good luck,
Ian

Trudy,
Sorry ’bout your dunking…I would add to this that after uninstalling both that you go through the registry and remove any reference to the Canon Software (and you’ll probably have to dig a bit). Having the same setup w/ a 10D I know that some of the Canon dlls need to be unhooked for the CS RAW filter to work properly.

Good Luck

First, make sure that Camera RAW shows up in the plugins list in Photoshop. If not, it’s misinstalled.

Thank you both for your replies. I did join Adobe support and they were very helpful. The problem actually was two fold. The color management set up (I am not strong in this aspect of Photoshop) added to the problem slightly, but the main problem was that I thought I was capturing images using slow shutter sync flash. I wasn’t. The only shots that were misread were ones where the flash didn’t fire. I didn’t see this on some of the thumbnail file info because when I had tried to open the file this info was lost. However, with the phone support today, I found enough of these corrupted images to see the misfire (or no fire.) The thumbnails didn’t distort until the image was viewed as a full RAW file. For some reason, they did not distort at all in Canon’s viewer.
I thought it was interesting that Canon emailed a rather terse reply about not supporting Photoshop and never seemed to think that it could be a driver or camera problem. <g>.
Now that I know what happened, I can avoid this situation in the future. I also learned a lot about color management today. I primarily use Photoshop to come up with ideas for paintings. I do love photography but my perspective is that as a 2D image, photos have their own presence. I was never hung up on worrying about whether a color looked the same in a print as real life because a print wasn’t real life (as long as the full image hung together.) However, I did need to start to understand color management if I am going to decide to make my own giclees!

Best regards. I appreciate your thoughtful answers.
