Anyone knowing if this is a documented problem or why it happens will be my new best friend.

hehe….I am having a problem selecting text with the text tool. Basically i am making a text object…copying it using the drag and drop method onto the ‘new layer’ button in the layers palatte…making the original layer invisble with the ‘eye’ and then back to the text tool make textual changes to the new copy. Sometimes tho it is the invisible layer underneath that get selected and it drives me batty. Also of note is that these text objects are in folders (i am really copying a folder with the text object inside).

I’m a member of NAPP and sent my question to the help desk and was told that it is impossible for photoshop to do that and that I shouldn’t use the opacity slider to make an object invisible. Haha…not much help…oh well.

Also, I have noticed this same thing on more than one install of photoshop…and i notice others have had the same problem as indicated in the posts below but have not found a solution.

to select text to modify click on the T in the layer palette of the layer you want to edit
not the layer
not in the image
you can’t type into an inactive layer (eye off)

Am I lucky or what?!? I was expecting my new best friend to be some hairy dude with ‘S’ back and a plumbers crack…KatWoman will do just fine! hehe…btw your suggestion works great, tyvm KatWoman. It is, however, not very intuitive and must be something from before my photoshop days.

I have a 98% success rate simply clicking on the text right in the image and never thought to use the ‘T’ icon. That is until some combination of layers, text, and folders jumps me to an invisible layer upon click. It can be done ….really. Check out this video to see what i mean….

maybe it’s a Mac thing?
I always used to use the cursor but after it always tries to make a new layer instead of editing the existing one I started using the "click the T method" (heard it first on this NG) and am a lot less frustrated. Of course the experts in layout will tell you PS is a poor layout program and to use Illy instead.

Minor comment

On my PC system it is a double click to select the text to make it editable a single click only selects the layer
