I am new to photoshop so this may sound like a basic question.

I have an object in an image that is surrounded by a solid-colored background. I want to "cut out" the object from the background so the object in question stands alone. How do I do this?

For a beginner, the best thing to do is to play with the Extract Filter. It’s pretty nifty and with a little trial and error, in concert with the help file, you should get decent results. Filter|Extract Filter…

If you’re going to place the image in Pagemaker or Quark and it will overlap something else, you can draw a path with the pen tool and save it as a tiff with a clipping path. No need to delete the bkgd. If it will be placed in InDesign, you could make a layer mask and save it as a .psd. If it will stand alone on a white bkgd or all you want is an image, you have many choices (extract, layer mask, clipping path, magic wand, etc).
