I have an image that I took the background out and can not make the back ground transparent because I do not now how to "Save As". I have photoshop
7.0 and Image Ready.

I have done ovals and rectangles in Photoshop and save them as TGA and they do work in Premiere 6.5 well, but when I bring in an image and take the background out, I have no luck, I trid saving it as TGA and it is not producing a transparent background.

You have to define the alpha channel. To do that, select the transparent pixels and save the selection as a new channel, then when you save your Targa, make sure the alpha channel check box is ticked. That channel can then be used in Premiere, or any other NLE, to define transparency. Ho, and make sure you have the 7.01 PS update…

BTW, why are you using Targa? A while back, the Targa file format was the only way to get transparency in video NLE, but now most high end editor, including Premiere I’m sure, can use PSD image and read transparent area within without defining an alpha channel. Since Vegas started supporting PSD’s, I gave up on Targa altogether. All you have to make sure of is that you don’t flatten the layers, as that would make the transparent pixel white (opaque); Use the merge command instead, or leave the document layered.

Okay, lets say I bring in a photo of a face and I use the lasso tool to cut out the back ground, do I have to do anything special before I do this?…When I cut the background the background is white and not transparent

Once you have the face selected, press SHFT+CTRL+J, that will cut the selection and send it to it’s own layer. Then delete the background layer, you should have the face surrounded by transparent pixel by now. Now save as a PSD working copy, I never never work on an original (I use the same file name but just add WC to it), and you should be all set.

I finally got my back ground transparent when I cut the image, but could not save it as PSD because when I brought the image in Premiere, and went to the make transparent window and used alpha, it still did not produce a over lay…BUT, when I saved the same image in Targa, it did work…???

I finally got it to work Using Image Ready, but saved it as TARGA and it work….I must say that when I cut an image I do it in sections, I can not do a close cut out by cutting the whole image at once, I wonder if this is the problem using Photoshop. I will try what you recommended again in Photoshop

I finally got it to work doing what you said below in Photoshop, But I cut the whole image in one pass. I will try it by cut it more careful by doing the cutting in sections to see if that will work. Thanks
