I am trying to use the chalkfilter, yet I can’t for it asks to change the foreground and background color.? Any idea to how I can do this.

To change the foreground or background colors, look on the tool palette at the left (usually). At the bottom are your foreground and background color swatches. Click on them to change the color, click on the little (tiny) double arrow to switch between foreground and background.
