Can anyone help here. I am still on photoshop 5 but will be upgrading. I am trying to convert a JPG to GIF. I beleve a GIF has to be 256 colours. so.

I have Converted JPG to 256 Colours
Saved as GIF
Copied entire image using the Marque into a new Transparancy file Cut out the transparancy sections leaving the Chequer board background

Problem I can only save as PSD.. I have Ticked the box (preserve transparency)

If I flatten the image I loose the transparency tick box and Chequer board background.

Where am I going wrong.

Desmond.

The background layer doesn’t support transparency, and the flatten command merge all the layers into a background. Don’t use the flatten command but use the merge command instead as you don’t have to have a background layer; Also, a bckgd layer can be renamed so it will behave like any other layer after.
Alternatively, you can leave the document layered and use the "save for web" command, which is a better option than just the "save as" in my opinion.

I don’t have a background image. As I have pasted the image into a new transparency image file. When I modified it by cutting areas out for transparency it insists on save as PSD format only.

Yes, that’s right. You should save your original as PSD, then use "Save for Web" to produce a Gif. Otherwise, you lose your layers, a lot of your color and whatnot. Gif is a final format for the web, not a working one.

It has been a long time but I think in PS 5.0 you have to use File > Export
and then save it as a GIF in the Export Dialog Box. You don’t have to convert it to 256 colors first.

No Save for Web in PS 5. As Bruce Johnson said, Export>Gif 89a.
