If you can open your picture (black lines) in Photoshop, then take the macig wand
and mark the black line only! Make sure you get everything you want! "select similar"
Then "Edit", Copy and then open a new with the size you want. And then "Edit" paste!
There you go!

You dont need to have a background color on the new picture Just chose transparent and the you will have no background when you paste in to the new image.

I have a small line art image (black lines, white background) which I would like to paste into another image, with the background image showing through where there are no lines. I.E., I want the background of the line art image to be transparent, not white as it is now. How can I accomplish this in PS 7?

TIA

you can also very easily select the black lines by going to the channels pallette and ctrl + clicking on the rgb channel. this should create a selection. then, invert the selection. create a new layer, and fill the selection with black. this should give you perfect line art floated off the background.
