I have a simple thing I’m trying to do, but
it might turn out too difficult 🙂

I have this image I am wanting to spot color sep.
I want the "C" to print with Silver ink.
I want the "3" to print with Gold ink.
I want the "onstruction LLP" to print with Silver ink. (2 color job)

My dilemma is that the letters are filled with shade of the desired color and PS doesn’t seem to allow me to assign a spot color to a layer that has shades of that spot color.

Sample

http://bellsouthpwp.net/r/_/r_seyler/C3Construction Ver 2.psd Each spot color object is on it’s own layer in the psd file.

And I know that Silver is going to be very weak to try to see on paper….. ugggh customers, what ya gonna do?!? 🙂

Any advise?

IMHO:
You should *not* be using PhotoShop for this … a vector drawing program would be much better.

Try Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Canvas, etcetera … and save the *final* version as an EPS file with your spot colors defined.

LOL
No kidding!! I’ve jumped through every hoop I could today and no luck.. PS apparently won’t allow spots on shaded areas.
Like I said, looks simple, but………………… 😉

I did one in Corel using the contour function, but it’s not a nice as the PS fill.
A Crappy logo to spend hours on that’s for sure LOL

Convert the layers to individual graycale Tiffs. Place in Quark or Indesign. Colorize with the spots.

Hey Eric,
I did that and brought them into Corel and PageMaker
but the clipping path necessary for grayscales (who bounding box overlap) wasn’t good enough for text..

Thanks for the Idea though….

If I didn’t have to show a proof to a third party, I’d just bring all three (grayscales) into PageMaker and assign a spot to each and align with guides, then delete the spots not being printed on the individual plate at the moment..

I got wrangled into this third party thingie.. 🙂

Paste them inside a frame (RageMaker) instead. There is plenty of room.

Unless, of course, you’re going to have to run them over a background.

Thanks for the Idea though….

You bet. This may help as well:
