I am struggling with an action that won’t copy a selection to the Layer Mask. Instead it generates a new layer with the selection. Is this a bug?

The relevant section of the action looks like this:

Set Selection
To: All
———————-
Copy
———————-
Make
New: channel
At: mask channel
Using reveal selection
———————-
Show current channel
———————-
Select current channel
———————-
Paste
Anti-alias: none

Recording the action adds "Select current channel" when I select the layer mask under the channels tab. That can’t be right because it doesn’t specify ‘layer mask’. Can anybody confirm this is a bug, or at the very least an oversight in the part of the programmers?

Anybody have a work around? This action is very long and tedious to do by hand. It would be a huge time saver if I could get it to work.

I should mention I’m running Photoshop 7.0.

Thanks,
Kevin

Try to select the layer mask in the layer palette instead of the channels palette, see if that helps. You might have to make it visible first, by alt-clicking it before pasting.

Mathias, you’re a genius! Thank you. 🙂

It would seem that you need to bring the layer mask into focus by clicking the layermask thumbnail in the Layers tab before you paste.. whether you do it by alt-click or by going into the channels tab. Apparently skipping this step, and just clicking the layermask thumbnail in the Channels tab, is not the same thing.

Finally, some recognition! 😉

Youre welcome.
