I can’t open the NEF pictures off my Nikon D200 camera in Photoshop CS2. I get the error "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".

I’ve searched and searched the Google groups and other places and can’t find anything to help me.

I don’t know anything about plug-ins, how to get plug-ins, how to see my plug-ins, or if plug-ins have anything to do with my problem.

Right now I’m using the PictureProject software that came with the camera to (at least) look at my photos. I can also export them to a JPEG or TIF format, but I’d like to use a raw format in Photoshop.

Is TIF going to be the closest I get?

I find that very unbelievable, because this must the one of the most common questions asked about Photoshop and RAW files. It also surprises me every time that people go to all places to search for an answer, except to most obvious place: Adobe. You have to download the latest version of Camera RAW from Adobe. When Photoshop CS2 was introduced, the Nikon D200 did not exist, so the version of Camera RAW that came with CS2 does not support it. Do read the ‘Read Me’ file that tells you where to install it! It shoud NOT be installed in the usual ‘plugins’ folder.

No need to resort to TIF.

You’ll be fine, once you install the newest version of Camera Raw. http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

Be careful, as Johan says, about installation. It needs to go in a common area shared by Photoshop and Bridge, as described in the installation docs. After installing, use Help>About Plugin to verify that you have exactly one copy of ACR installed, and that it is the correct version. If you do run into problems, and are using Windows, use AcrChecker to check your installation:

Another common issue to watch out for is that Nikon’s own plugin can cause problems, and it is installed automatically by NikonView. Once again, you can use Help>About Plugin to verify that Nikon’s plugin is not installed. —
