Learn to use the pen tool. With that you can make very precise shapes.

Very complex vector shapes are probably best created in Illustrator and then brought into Photoshop

I right click on the path, that brings up the diolog.

..5 is good for smooth selections.

PSE has number of custom shapes that I would like to copy and move to my Mac graphics program. (AppleWorks) I open the shape and draw it on the "new" page of PSE. Then I click to save it, but the page comes up blank when I am finished. I want to save the blank shape with no text or graphics to use with another project in Apple Works but it keeps disappearing. What am I doing wrong? Thanks…

Hi, Clint. Are you remembering to simplify the shape before you try to save it? And (I’ve done things like this) are you sure that you don’t have white as your foreground color?

Also, for appleworks I would make the PE file at a high resolution, like 200 or 300 ppi and save it as a high-res PICT file. Appleworks handles PICT better than other formats. The shape will be huge when you drop it into your appleworks doc., but it will look better after resizing if there’s a substantial amount of data there to begin with. If you draw actual size at 72 ppi in PE you may get a fairly jaggy image in Appleworks.

Oh, also, if you are using Appleworks 6.2.9, you need to turn on ‘fractional character widths’ in the text preferences to make your graphics look smooth. (Yeah, I know, but really, it helps.)

Barbra…DUH &DUH! Thanks for pointing out my problem. I overlooked both the foreground color and the simplify step…I must be getting funny in my old age…Many thanks for your assistance…It’s working fine now…Clint…

I’m sorry to have to bother you folks for this one; I’ve seen this tutorial 100 times, and now that I need it I can’t find it! I simply want to make a two pixel thick rectangle with rounded corners to save as a custom shape with the intention of using it as a frame for images. Can someone point me in the right direction, please!
Thanks! DB~

How do you "Define Custom Shapes?" Every time I want to save a custom shape, it’s grayed out.

You need to make your graphic a path first. You can do this by making a selection of it, and then hit the create path from selection icon in the Paths Palette. Now you should be able to save as a Custom Shape.

Hi,
I use to work with a large variety of custom shapes files and I wish to print each one of them. Is it possible? Can you tell me what is the simplest way to do it?

Tanks 😉

Create a new file that is 8.5" by 11". Make your custom shapes at the desired size in rows and columns. Print. Repeat procedure until all custom shapes are printed.

Tips:
Using a grid or guides with "Snap" enabled will help with alignment. Linking columns or rows and aligning will work too.
