Hi Group,
Just wondering if anyone knows a way to blur things as the "blur" tool does, but many times stronger. Like "painting" on about a 50 pixel radius Gaussian blur. With the blur tool, I need about 20 or more passes to get the effect I want. I would like to be able to "paint’ a deep blur with one stroke of a brush, so to speak. I’ve tried all the modes with the blur tool. I could select an area to blur, but some of the selections are a little complex. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Maybe this is similar to what you are looking for:

Masks are the best way to go. They take a little learning, but they work slick once you get the hang of it.

Hope that helps. 🙂

You can also use the history brush (witch is not apreciated here…I’m sure 😉 )
Apply the blur on the entire image (better on a copy)
Select this step as a source of the history brush, select the history brush tool
go backward of 1 step in your history palette (before the blur) paint on it with the history brush tool.
look at the F1 pages for more informations

It’s simplier when you don’t need to be that precise.

Perhaps this may be a slightly better solution:

make a duplicate of your layer (CTRL+J, I think) and apply the gaussian blut to it. Alt+click the layer mask button in the Layers palette. The image should be looking like nothing happened now. Click on the mask and use the brush tool to paint with white over the areas you want blurred. Use black paint to cover the areas that need to remain sharp. (Sorry if I’m not being clear, I’m kinda tired after a night’s work.)

Here’s my idea….

run the required Blurring effect on the image
on the History palette take a snapshot (middle icon on bottom row) on the History palette click on the previous step (or CTRL Z pc) [ MAC = CMD Z ??] to return to the original state
activate the history brush (keyboard Y)
adjust the History brush attributes as desired
brush on the blur!

Hope that’s of use!
