Blur question

Hi y’all,

I’m seeking the proper name for the following technique and, when possible, a description how you would do this.
Imagine a diagonal line on a photo. This image must be enlarged. Ideal (I think) should be an enlargement precisely 2x, so each pixel becomes 4 pixels. Than, with a (the name I’m looking for) blur filter, the gaps within the enlargement should be filled.
When / if the size still is to small, I could do that again, until oversized.

I know many filters or professional programmes were written, to do this for us, but I’m still on PhotoShop 4 and I feel no need to invest.

Are there free filters for PhotoShop to do this job?

Hope to read you,
TIA

Frans

If I understand you correctly, you want to resize the picture and think that Photoshop cannot do that already? What you describe is called ‘interpolation’ (filling the gaps) and Photoshop automatically does that during the resize. Use ‘bicubic’ for the best results.

Yes, you’ll understood me very well, Johan. Next question: can’t I switch this interpolation function off?

No. If you increase the size of the picture, you need more pixels. There is no way to increase the size without adding pixels. A file with ‘holes’ in it does not exist. You can only choose the interpolation method (bicubic, nearest neighbor), but you cannot turn it off and have more pixels nevertheless. Just as you cannot get a balloon to increase in size without letting extra air in (at the same outside air pressure).

if you have a lifetime and a half to spare try googling on digital image interpolation

Be warned though – its math, a bit of linear and non-linear and discrete cosine functions etcetera and so forth

good stuff for sure but a lot ranging from beginner to post grad to research papers
