I have a tea cup against a black background…. I would like to add steam rising from the cup.

Any suggestions?

Why not paint on a separate layer with a huuuuuuge, liiiiight and bluuuurry brush on a copy of your cup layer
You can adjust opacity of the steam
Better way : make 2 steam layers and adjust opacity of one lighter than the second
It’ll add some perspective to the image
Better with a tablet…

Dude. Don’t be slow.

Take a photo of a cup of HOT, STEAMY TEA …
It doesn’t even have to be good tea.

Even water would do.

You do have access to hot water, yes?

Yes, and it doesn’t register. Most photographers use a kind of STEAM flake when shooting this sort of thing that fakes steam… which is difficult to shoot. I checked this out with photographers locally.

They’re a touch short of imagination then. Set up your hot water in front of a black board with a flash at about a 45 deg angle behind the hot water receptacle. Should come out fine.

I’ve used burning, ground up tobacco on a black background, then manipulated it in PS to look like steam.

the moisture droplets that form inside the cup are usually avoided at any cost. Not asthetically pleasing according to some who seem to know. Therefore the chips are used often in higher end work.

one of the tutorials deals with smoke and turning it steamy

Sadly none were actually helpful. The one tutorial that was posted I followed as closely as I could, but it was obvious that minor steps were left out or it was assumed that I could fill in the blanks…. thus it didn’t work for me. It looked interesting, I just couldn’t make it happen.

I don’t spend a lot of time surfing the Internet… I know that Adobe has some web stuff, but I tend to find it difficult to navigate their systems to find what I want.

In the long run I simple fiddled around with the tools that I could and came up with the results that I did… which evidently upset some clown whose computer I must have destroyed in my innocence.

A picture is worth a thousand words – a word is 4 bytes. Therefore, a picture is equivalent to 4k. Was your photo more than 4k in size?

Did you know that a copy of your picture was posted to every newsserver in the world that carries this group? Potentially, that’s several hundred at least – which makes an "innocent" 4k image swell to several hundred thousand bytes (about half a meg) if you consider the space wasted across ALL servers.

If your picture was larger, the waste compounds dramatically …. 🙂

Messages expire on servers as space is used up. Like the oxygen in a room, it takes quite a bit to "use up" a newsserver’s resources. Yet, there you went, and made a good stab at it. Usenet is not going to fall, but if there were a couple dozen more "you"s, my service provider might decide to stop carrying a "stealth binary group". This group. That would indeed kill this group, at least at my end. Ooops!

Happy now?
