Just blurring the edges will not let the image fade in ‘whatever background’, because JPEG doesn’t support transparency. You need to know the exact color of the background and blur into that color in Photoshop.

First – always work on a copy of the background image so that way you can work that image while still having the original to go back to if need be.

Create a new layer underneath your image. Fill that new layer with the color of your choice. Then what you can do is use the rectangle marquee tool to select the image and do a feather of however many pixels that you want. Then on the image (not the color background) go select==>inverse==>delete. This will create a vignette where the background color will come through.

Using feather is a permanent action. What you can do to test the amount of feather is to do a gaussian blur which is will give you same exact effect — you use the same amount of gaussian blur that you would use for the feather. In other words; if you use a gaussian blur of 30 pxls as your test that will be the same reaction as using a feather of 30 pxls. The good thing about using the gaussian blur is that the effect box lets you use the preview option which you can’t do with feather.

If you need any clarification or other assistance drop me an e-mail at

You can do this directly with PNG, using an alpha channel, or if you don’t mind poor quality, GIF, but not directly with jpeg.

Your best option there is to attempt to match the borders of your jpeg to the web background, but this can be tricky to match the colors precisely. —

Assuming you’re talking about a printed page, not a web page….

In PS6.0 Make sure the image is on a layer (not background). MArquee select near the perimeter of the image, choose SELECT>FEATHER and enter an amount, Choose SELECT>INVERSE, press DELETE.

Then you can can COPY this layer onto another image or, if your publishing software supports photoshop files, save the file in psd format and place it in your document.

Or, easier still for a simple edge-feather, place the original image in InDesign and choose feather edges from the available options. This way you retain control of the feathering in your document.

If you want to have a soft-edged jpeg on a web page, you need to match the background in photoshop and paste your feathered image onto this, then save it as a jpeg. Be aware though that when you jpeg it, the colour may shift slightly and the rectangle might be visible on your webpage. You could possibly control this by making a matching jpeg image using only the background colour and using this simple image as a backround image on the webpage.

I did a similar thing on my own webpage, not with a feathered image but with an non-rectangular image (at least, it looks non-rectangular on the page).

The frog an mountain pics are one image with a matching background pattern.
