I’m wanting to get a convertible laptop to run my adobe programs on. I’m wondering what specs I should be looking for. Ideally, I would like 3ghz, 100gb, 1gb ram, firewire port, dual layer dvd writer, and a decent amount of video ram. I’m having trouble finding that. Tablet pc’s don’t come in 3ghz. And to get the specs I’m looking for it really shoots the price up to a ridiculous amount for what you’re getting. So, I guess my questions would be: What are the minimum specs I should look for? I would like to be running Photoshop, AE, and Premiere all at once and not have it hang on me. Do I need more ghz or more memory for that to work?

Hi,

I’m using the full Creative Suite CS2, Premiere Elements and some other "heavy-weight" software on my laptop. No problems having Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive and Premiere Elements open at the same time.

Properties: 1.66 GHz, 1.2 GB RAM, approx. 100 GB hard disk space, Intel processor. Model: Samsung Q35.

I would go for more than 1 GB of RAM if I were you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that does help. How much video ram do you have? And have you tried using just a graphics tablet as opposed to a convertible laptop? Some are saying it’s not as sensitive as the external tablets. Honestly, I’ve never used either so I’m not really sure what kind of features I should be looking for when it comes to the tablet part. I think I would mostly use it for writing notes on screen and using the freeform ‘select’ tools in Photoshop.

I’m using an external Wacom graphics tablet. (Works fine with Creative Suite and with other applications as well.)
I’m not sure about the amount of video RAM (I don’t have my laptop here with me to check).

I assume from the speed you mention you are talking about a Wintel. Speed means heat – heat is the enemy of reliability. Better to compromise on speed and bump up the RAM. But remember XP Pro (non-64 bit) will only use 3GB (more or less) so don’t waist any money by going more than 4GB.
Look at the Apples – nice displays.

Good luck,
Ron
