Hello

I know what it does – but it plops squares where I don’t want them. I have tried and tried to select an area using the magic lasso tool – but when I go off the line without clicking the thing plonks down squares of its own.

I fondly imagined it would link mouse clicks and only mouse clicks. Not the case, If I adjust my hand position without clicking I get a selection line wandering across the image and loads of squares that resist undoing. I have read the book and it’s no help, I can’t get on a course until September – help.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

John

Using the magic lasso tool!

I suggest you use the lasso tool or the learn to use the pen tool, far more precision with them, I think when you first start to use PS you try the magic lasso tool, but as soon as you gain some skills you move on! I may be wrong, there may be aficionados here adept in its use! no doubt they will set me straight!!!

If that is what you want, then either use the Polygon lasso tool, or hold down the ALT key on your keyboard while you use the regular lasso tool.

The magic lasso tries to follow sharp edges and changes in color in the general area where you pass the mouse cursor.

I assume you are using the magnetic lasso tool. Look on the toolbar and see the options that are available. You can adjust the width of the area it looks in for an edge as well as the amount of contrast needed to be considered an edge. Areas that are similar in tone or color and contrast need a lower setting. You can also adjust how frequent it adds a control point as well as the feather of the selection. HTH.
