I have been using the sharpening method where I Gaussian Blur a copy of the Background layer that had been passed through a High Pass filter. I like this method because of the control and it allows me to toggle the layer on and off or even remove it later if I want. I have noticed that Smart Sharpen in CS2 does not suck too badly and I would like to try it but I do not want to apply it to the background copy for the reasons mentioned. Is there a way to apply the Smart Sharpen filter to a copy of the Background then blend (or something) it with the background?

Thanks,
Ron

Yes, in fact it is preferred to do it that way. Duplicate the Background layer, and blend by setting it to Luminosity blending mode.

Thank you Bart. I used your reply to generate a Google search: luminosity blend smart sharpen cs2
After a brief look I see that there is a lot more to learn about sharpening. Like blending options, edge sharpening, multi pass sharpening, selective sharpening etc. Luckily for me most of what I found is available for free.
