When do you think the next version of Photoshop will be released? Don’t want to upgrade if a new version will come out in a month or two. Any ideas?

Q1 or Q2 2007. At least from things Adobe’s CEO has said. They are trying to time it for Vista, at least as close as they can considering Microsoft says one thing and then says another.

They are trying
to time it for Vista,
yeah that way they can blame it on each other when all their ^%#& don’t work right out the box before the updates come out to fix it
Nice of Adobe to abandon it’s own formats too, like PSD that the industry has used as standard and all of us have thousands of files in. I will never trust another Adobe proprietary format again.

Some one doesn’t like the evolution of technology. I would suggest you get used to it or go find and old Timex Sinclair computer. You don’t have to worry about file compatibility with it.

Also, Adobe hasn’t abandoned anything. You can still read and write PSD files and you will for a long time to come. However, Adobe doesn’t recommend using that format any more. TIF is more widely supported and supports everything that PSD does.

so should I start saving all original working files as layered tiffs instead of PSD now?
so far my preferred method of saving files is
psd in layers (would now change to TIFF w/layers)
tiff flattened in print res
jpeg in web size

Kat: It’s merely a rumor. Adobe has made no such announcement.

Besides, Adobe wouldn’t abandon their PSD format. They would at least have a conversion utility.

In fact, somebody from Adobe has denied it here already.

Adobe is however recommending that people start using TIFF instead of PSD. Many years down the line they could decide to drop it. TIFF is more standard anyways and offers better compression options.

Take a look at the Adobe Labs forums for Lightroom. It has been mentioned there several times.

Go to:

It is the 16th message down, the first message from Jeff Schewe.

Ah ha. And readers are really wringing out the subject. Well, so it is unofficial, but almost certain.

I hope we see a lightning fast, batch and command-line "PSD to TIFF converter" in due time. Or will it be PSD to DNG?

Gee, change is hard. 🙂

It is disputable whether Adobe ARE doing that. But who here seriously imagines that Adobe will try to release an upgrade to Photoshop in future that can’t READ today’s PSDs?

First, what would be the technical justification? Code exists to read a PSD file and turn it into Photoshop’s internal representation, with layers, channels, etc. Are they going to remove some of those features, making such code impossible? Now THAT would be a much bigger topic!

And what would happen to sales of the upgrade? And to Adobe’s reputation? Would Adobe want to try to sell a product that couldn’t read vast numbers of millions of image files that many of its direct competitors can read?

I have no trouble believing that in future Adobe will gently steer people towards using TIFF, perhaps by changing defaults, and even adding features to TIFF that are not in PSD. (Although I have no evidence they plan that). But I can’t imaging a future Photoshop release not being able to read the PSDs its predecessors have written.

(And I certainly expect to see other products exploiting DNG, including Linear DNG, far more than now, using "metadata editing" rather than "rendered pixel editing". If I am using an Adobe product in 5 years time that wan’t save to PSD, it is more likely to be because I have switched to metadata editing and no longer use Photoshop).

I didn’t believe it at first, but this looks as close to official as it gets.

Not DNG. DNG stands for "Digial NeGative". It saves the raw data from an original camera image, and not the layered structure of a PSD or TIFF file. PSD files will be readable for the forseeable future. After all, Pixar format is still supported, as it was in Photoshop v1.

Gee, change is hard. 🙂

It makes things interesting too.

After reading Jeff Schewe’s note above, I’ll be switching to TIFF. —

Okay. I should go back to school… but what was the format proposal that was virtually an extension of TIFF?

DNG. However, it is based on TIFF but it ISN’T TIFF. It doesn’t support non-RAW data or layers and things like that. It is specially for RAW image data for digital cameras.

This won’t happen anytime soon. This is why Adobe is telling people to get used to saving in TIFF. As soon as they feel enough people are they will probably drop PSD. We are talking two or three upgrades from now, not CS3.

I would also bet that since Adobe owns the TIFF format that they will continue to make tweaks to it based on feedback so that when they do drop PSD there won’t be any problems.

I also, wouldn’t be surprised if PSD doesn’t end up turning in to an import filter like some of the other formats Adobe has dropped from Photoshop. The filter will be included on the Photoshop CD but won’t be installed with the software. You have to go install it yourself manually.

See response from Johan W. Elzenga. You can read a TIFF or JPEG file into Lightroom, then save this as Linear DNG. In future, there will probably be more routes to Linear DNG. (An early route was DxO).

Linear DNG doesn’t (yet) support layers. I’m not sure that it ever will. But it can support metadata editing, and that will become more important over time. It isn’t just Linear DNG that can support metadata editing. Raw DNG does so. This capability will increase over time as well.

I suspect that while people are still debating whether any form of DNG can support full pixel-rendered editing, many photographers will have switched to metadata editing stored in DNG and left the debate behind! I think some of the questions being raised are the wrong questions, and asking the right ones will lead to some radical answers.
