For some reason my first post added itself to an old post so I’ll try again! I am thinking of taking the plunge to CS2, can anyone advise the best way of installing!
Is it best to uninstall the previous version first?
Obviously I would wish to retain as many Actions, brushes, styles and plugins as possible, would it be best to copy all these to a new folder before progressing?
Is there anything I have forgotten?

It should install in a different directory than a previous version. You never want to install over the current version, meaning do not install CS2 in to the same directory as CS1, etc. There should be no problems having two versions installed.

As for the other goodies you will need to make sure that things like actions, textures, etc. are saved as files so that you can load them in to CS2. This is generally done from the little circle with arrow flyout menus on the palettes in question or you can use what I think they call the preset manager.

Hi Harry,

There is no need to uninstall CS first. In fact, I keep my old copy of PS6 available just in case I run into validation problems while traveling.

As I’m sure you know, actions and brushes can be saved as files and reloaded to your new version. Plugins generally need to be moved manually. If you have very many, it’s probably better to put them in a shared plugin folder.

You may want to hang back a bit. CS3 is around the corner, though still some months off, and your upgrade price will be the same going to that version as to CS2.

Install it. It won’t overwrite CS. Each major (non-point) version creates a new directory.

You can copy over the earlier actions and the like.

FWIW, I keep strange plug-ins separate from all CS directories. You can check [ ] additional plug-in directory in Preferences.

Harry,

As others have correctly stated, CS2 will install into a separate directory. I still have CS(1) living comfortably with CS2 on one workstation, as I have been too busy to move/copy all of the plug-ins, etc. to CS2 there, and will just grab CS if I need to use, say Eye Candy on that machine.

Only caveat that I can offer, above what you already have mentioned, is that if you use Version Cue in CS, disable it and let CS2’s VC install and run. If you do not, you will have both versions of VC start with OS and that can cause some workflow problems, if you are not careful, plus use resources unnecessarily.

When you do uninstall CS, there should be no problem – just make sure that you have copied all of the little extras elsewhere and installed them in CS2. I do a DVD, or CD, backup of all that stuff (along with system bu’s) in case I forget to copy them, prior to uninstall.

Only complaint that I have is that some of my plug-ins go back a ways and a few have to be "installed," rather than just copied to the appropriate folders. Also, as PS gets more robust and is incorporated more closely with other Adobe products, the number and diversity of folders for this stuff increases. Gone are the days of just sticking it all into one Plug-in folder, but that is the price we pay to have a "Creative Suite." No biggie.
