I write my .psd files to cdrom after editing is complete. I’m looking for a cataloging or indexing program that will organize these files in some sort of local database and display thumbnails. Most of the programs that I have investigated so far do not support photoshop format, just jpeg or tiff.
Does anyone know of a package that will support photoshop format without an included flattened version?

Thanks..

I use Photools iMatch
http://www.photools.com/

Bit of a learning curve to it especially since you really need to thing out how you want your database to work, but once you get the hang of it and get it set up it’s astonishing how powerful it is.

I believe it reads .PSD with layers though you’d have to check that out for yourself as I don’t use it that way.

I also like the fact that backing up EVERYTHING (thumbnails, database layout, your searches) involves copying one folder. Copy that folder and install iMatch on another computer (a laptop in my case) and you can annotate photos and work from the thumbnails while away from the office. You just have to be sure and copy the changed files back to your master folder when you get back <grin>.

As they say in the site, TRY THE DEMO. The initial set up is a bit of a pain but the rewards of a well though out database are WORTH IT!

ThumbsPlus 6 from Cerious Software (www.cerious.com) does a fine job. It is not freeware, but they do (or at least did) have a demo ver. For PSD’s to show up, you will need to Save the file with "preview", but that is usually the default for saving a PSD. I did have some PSD’s saved from Painter 8, that did not have a preview, but everything I do in PS does. This preview does make the file slightly larger, but does not effect Layers, or anything else. Is this what you meant by "without an included flattened version?" It has great search capabilities and does a fine job of finding identical image files on your system, regardless of file name, JPG ratios, or sizing/crops. Runs on ME -> XP, incl W2K. I do not know about MAC OS’s. Only caveat, the database file can get rather large!

Picase (free) does as well. That is not to say that I specifically recommend the program as I am still trying it out myself and it has some things I may not like, but it does show PSD files as images

okay i’ll admit it: i’ve used Picasa since Google announced it as a freebie and luv it to bits

It suits my workflow and FWIW some hints and tips:

1 – when porting images from camera or card save the folder to Prime image folder
(when I write Prime image folder I mean a folder of sub-folders)

2 – never ever under any circumstances edit these images the exception being a database categorising so you may search on topics, themes or field descriptors

3 – when you seek to work on an image copy the image to its own folder in WIP folder
(for example I will copy image [alphabetic bits]0624 in Prime image folder to folder 0624 in WIP folder)

4 – work on image 0624 in the 0624 folder saving revisions as you go

it sorta works for me

ps I tend to search on field properties in the Prime images shortlisting the WIP folders using the obvious and blatant link
