There are numerous filters available that will allow you to Sepia color pictures. However, if you haven’t ready access to a Sepia filter, here are a couple of methods you could use as starters lieu of having a filter. If you intend to Sepia tone many pictures, I think it would be wise to procure a commercial Sepia filter instead of using manipulative methods to Sepia tone pictures.
1- Open the image in Photoshop. If it is in color, desaturate it. If it’s B&W, make sure you are in a color mode (RGB) which can be set in IMAGE > MODE > RGB color.
2- Go to LAYER > NEW FILL LAYER and select PATTERN
3- In the dialog box that appears, set the new layer’s OPACITY to about 40% (or experiment) and click OK.
4- Select the WOOD pattern (Color) and scale it down to 1.
5- Go to LAYER > FLATTEN IMAGE.
6- There may be a need to increase brightness and contrast.
Another method that may be used, which also requires experimentation:
1- If the picture is in color, desaturate it. If it’s B&W, make sure you are in color mode RGB.
2- Got to the COLOR PICKER and choose the brownish color you want to sue as a Sepia tone.
3- Set the MODE to OVERLAY.
4- Set the OPACITY and FLOW to about 50% (as a starting point).
5- Use the BRUSH tool to paint the picture being careful that you don’t overlap paint strokes.
