Does anyone know of a book which covers just PhotoShop CS2 and Illustrator CS2? Even ones covering PhotoShop CS and Illustrator CS would do the trick.

Other than that are there any good books (regardless of version) which cover PhotoShop and Illustrator? Beginning to intermediate level would be the best solution.

Thanking you in advance,

Sarah Hamilton.

Hi Sarah,

I’m not familiar with a single book that covers both Photoshop and Illustrator, though there might be some. I can, however, recommend the ‘Real World’ series of books. I have read (and re-read, and re-read) Real World Color Management and Real World Photoshop 7. They are very good. There is a Real World Photoshop CS2, and a Real World Illustrator CS2, as well as editions for all other Versions.

I would consider them appropriate for an intermediate or advanced user. Read through them once to get familiar with their content, then use them for reference as needed. Do some work-alongs as you read, and take notes if that’s your style. For me, anyway, there was just too much to retain on a once-through read. Great books.

Be aware that these books tend to be better for ‘thinking persons’, as they are not cookbooks. They teach concepts, and many of the examples they show, though detailed, still require that you think about want they are doing. That doesn’t mean they gloss over things. They are very thorough, but at the same time, they don’t hold your hand.

Googling will find many sources, or try Amazon.com, or AdobePress.com.

The "Classroom in a Book" series by Adobe is good for Photoshop beginners … dunno about Illustrator, I think Adobe has a "Classroom" book for that as well.

Once you get past the baby steps I think it’s best to get a 2nd book oriented toward what you want to use Photoshop for … ie, for web work or publishing or collage/montage or retouching or straight photography or whatever … there are a lot of good books on using Photoshop with photography for example, one I like is the "Photoshop Artistry" series by Barry Haynes. For serious retouching the books by Katrin Eismann are excellent … http://www.digitalretouch.org/ … the point is that once you get the basic commands down it’s good to find a second book that homes in on the specific line of work you’re interested in.

Hi Sarah

It must be smart to be smart as some of these guys. Sometimes I find that free tutorials from Clive Haynes, Ian Lyons, Russell Brown and About.com can be very useful. Also Photoshop TV is very good as are all the podcasts also free via itunes available to PC and Mac.Good luck
