I’ve had this problem for several months now and its driving me up the wall. I have the following custom built system:
P4 3.0Ghz Intel processor
D875PBZ Intel motherboard
Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb videocard
1 Gig generic sd-ddr ram
3 Hard drives
1 ATA controller
SB Audigy 2 platinum eX
Windows XP Pro SP1
I can’t think of anything else that might be relevant.
When I’m using photoshop 7, often times I can’t even get into the program. It will begin to load and then stop, and I won’t be able to close it, even through Task Manager. The only way I can close it is if I restart my computer. I tried switching out the memory with a different chip, same problem. I tried reinstalling windows and installing again, same problem. I tried formatting the disk, reinstalling windows, and installing again, same problem. I tried changing the scratch disks to a different harddrive, same problem. I tried alotting more memory until I couldn’t alott anymore, same problem. I tried installing on a different harddrive, same problem. I tried installing XP on a different harddrive, then installing, same problem. I tried cooling down the CPU, which I succeeded in doing. Same problem.
Then I installed a new heatsink, cooled off the CPU until its at 40c at high temperature, installed photoshop on a different drive with a clean installation of windows, and THEN i was able to get a little more use out of it. I was able to perform a few high-end functions for a few minutes. Then it crashed again.
The only thing I haven’t done is replaced the board, and I can’t see why I would need to do that. I am able to play, for example, the Godfather game, doom 3, GTA San Andreas without a problem, but Photoshop will just not run!
I also have the same problem with microsoft office and adobe premiere. I can’t figure out what could possibly be going wrong.
If someone can tell me what’s going on and help me out, I would be forever indebted to them.
