Camera RAW as default?

When opening images in PhotoshopCS from my Nikon, the program automatically opens them with the Nikon NEF plugin. I would vastly prefer the Adobe Camera RAW option, but I can’t seem to make it the default choice.

Life would be much simpler if I could browse and open directly with Camera RAW. Ruthlessly finding and trashing the Nikon NEF Plugins hasn’t worked yet.

Any suggestions out there?

No. RAW is used by many manufacturers and Photoshop CS can open quite a few of those. Not only Nikon or Canon, but also many other brands. The RAW for,at is not standardised however, so a Pentax RAW file is different from a Nikon RAW file, which is different from a Canon RAW file, which is different from an Olympus RAW file, etc.

Had the same problem. You need to remove the Nikon NEF plug-in from your machine… otherwise Photoshop CS defaults to this rather than Photoshops Camera Raw. As soon as you remove the Nikon NEF plug-in, Camera Raw will kick in.

Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats. There you will find 2 NEF plugins. Rename them or remove them.

Just change the file association in folder options so that that file type opens with Photoshop

The suggestions about removing the NEF plugins will work with some cameras , however with no real standard sometimes you have to do a work around. For example; Sony uses
it’s own standard for .rwa files and you have to convert them withe the software converter that Sony supplies and then save them as a .tiff file and then use Photoshop to convert them to a .raw that is recognized bo Photoshop. A real pain in the u-no-where and it would be great if camera manufacturers would get together with graphics people and see if a standard can be set. Another pet peeve of mine is that many camera makers still do no use adobe rgb as a option- this should be a requirement. "WoZ" wrote in message

The latter is pretty useless if you ask me. A camera RAW file is totally different from a ‘Photoshop RAW’ file. If you convert your Sony RAW file to a 16 bits TIFF with the Sony software, you can open and edit this TIFF in Photoshop, but there is no benifit in converting it to Photoshop RAW.
