Hi,

Is there anyway I can make a picture’s background ( an object on coloured background or something ) transparent without losing th quality of the image ? not gif format because it ruins everything !

Does anybody know if there is a function or command in photoshop fo example, that creates an effect similar to the chroma key i cinematography for photographs?

Bye , bye

You cannot have a true transparent background unless you can use a .GIF (which you stated you could not) or a native .PSD file.

However, there are several ways to accomplish this affect but they vary depending on how you will use the image.
Is it a web image?
A file to be printed?
Will it be against a colored background?
Will the background have texture?
That sort of stuff.
Please post more details as to the final use of the photo and we can go from there.

I believe that PNG does transparency … and EPS with a clipping path definitely "does transparency."

It is not a web image . I want to print this photos.
A photo has 300 ppi and 2000/2500 pixels and it is made on a colore background . I want to realise a kind of "collage" putting th photographed model ( a girl or an object) on different background, landscape or something like this.
I have tried something in photoshop using tha alpha channel masks but had problems in some regions with the hair.
The image attached is one of my trials . Does anybody know how can remove the background better than this way

That’s true, however many applications do not recognize a PNG or a clipping path.

Can’t use them in a Web Page, for example.
Can’t use a PNG in Quark Express.
That sort of thing.

That’s why I wanted to know how the image was to be used.

Odd, if you can’t use a PNG on a web page why’s Adobe include PNG in the "SAVE FOR WEB" options? And why’s it that they display just fine in my copy of IE?

Can’t use a PNG in Quark Express.

Odd… their help files mention PNG’s all over the place…

That sort of thing.

That’s odd … since PNG stands for ‘Portable Network Graphics’ … and the format was INVENTED by the Web Standards bunch … partially to get around the patent stuff clouding the GIF format …

The "traditional" print format for what you want to do would be using an EPS graphic with a clipping path.

Sorry, I haven’t done this in a few years, but "if memory serves" the procedure would be something like …

(1) Turn your Alpha layer into a clipping path … name it something simple like ‘Clipping Path’

(2) Delete (or flatten) all other layers and such … so that your graphic has only one layer plus the vector clipping path …

(3) Convert the graphic to CMYK (for a printing press … right?) …

(4) Save the graphic as an EPS file, with the clipping path …

Now you can insert the graphic … with the EPS clipping path … into a layout program such as InDesign, and the program will recognize the clipping path, and give you the "transparency" you are looking for.

Alternately, I believe that InDesign and PhotoShop will work together to preserve transparency across the applications … but I don’t really do "page layout" anymore, so you would have to visit one of the Adobe InDesign forum(s) to get a ‘heads-up’ on that.

PNGs do not display transparency or translucency in my copy of Internet Explorer 6 (not that I use it). I believe this is the usual behavior for IE in Windows.

There is code that can be added to a webpage that will make the png display properly in IE6, but unless the code has been added to the html someone browsing won’t see it correctly.
