This is not a Photoshop question, but one I am sure that many folk here will have suggestions for. I have to recover several GBs of image files, mostly JPGs, but also TIFFs, PSDs and some motion files. Just before a BU to DVD, the system crashed.

I have used Stellar-Phoenix, both FAT & NTFS and File Recovery. Unfortunately, just as that program is about to complete the scan (I can see the directory structure on the screen), the program dies. So close, but so far away!

I’m not necessarily looking for freeware programs, as I spent ~US$400 for the Stellar-Phoenix programs for all of my machines. What I want is a good recovery program, or two.

This particular structure is now on a smaller system with RAID0 120×2 HDDs. Unfortunately, the files were all Moved to my workstation, to do the BU, so I need to do a Recovery from this Disk Array. What programs (URLs really appreciated) would YOU use?

Thanks for the input and thoughts,
Hunt

Hi Hunt,
Don’t do anything rash. Step back and pause. In all likelihood things will just get worse from here if you do the wrong things. You should at least consider getting a price quote from a reputable data recovery company like Ontrack systems – ontrack.com. I have used them in the past and at this point they can definitely get your data back. However if you go in with software you are not familiar with using hardware that is questionable then you could make it much more expensive to get the data back if not impossible.

Good luck,
Ron

I had a similar problem but I had loads of AutoCAD files needing recovering. Needless to say everyone suggested OnTrack…. got a quote and nearly had a heart attack!

I ended going to http://www.retrodata.co.uk/ for data recovery. Best service I ever received outside of my own organisation and prices were as competitive as I have ever seen!

Try http://www.retrodata.co.uk/ and ask for Duncan!

Oh, wow, Hunt, if that was the rig that crashed you may be SOL. If I’m reading correctly, the images were on a striped (RAID 0) RAID array and the array crumbled. If so, I can sympathize, having had the same thing happen to me, but I know of nothing that will recover in such a situation. I don’t know every recovery application, for sure, but in my own searching when it happened to me I found nothing. Good luck.

Thanks for the concern, but no, the Array did not go south. I had the images on the Array, and Moved them to my main workstation to do a DL-DVD BU. It was THERE that the system (brand, spanking new too!) crashed. Since the files were Moved (note to self: always Copy, make BU, then Delete), they’re still on the Array, but not accessible, except through recovery utilities. The Array is controled via the MoBo through on-board Promise ROM, so sending in the drives, would require also sending in the MoBo with controller, or finding a controller with the same ROM chip/software.

That’s why I was looking for a file recovery utility to try and salvage the Moved files. Stellar-Phoenix FAT & NTSF comes very close, but then has a problem with the RAID0. One problem is that the system is WinME/FAT 32, not NTSF. I’ll just d-l several other utilities, and see if any of them can get me to where I need to get, before I buy them. I’m so close, as I can see the tree structure with all of the files, just before S-P hangs and their tech dept. hasn’t been able to come up with a fix, other than re-format the drives for NTSF, change OS to XP and forget it… should be something out there that will work.

Thanks,
Hunt
