A sudden memory shortage in PS

I have been happily using PS 7.0 for a long time. Yesterday something went wrong! PhotoShop closes it’s self before it finished loading. First I reinstalled it from the original CD and later I did another recovery from a recent back on an external hard drive.

I can now open PS but it will no longer open files that it had no problem with in the past.

I get the following message:
Could not open "I:\path\filename" because there is not enough memory (RAM)

The preference window tells me that My available memory is 345 MB Maximum used by Photoshop 50% =172 MB (I have moved this from 33% to 100% with no change)

The files I’m now trying to load are big at 25,760 KB but PS was able to do this a few days ago!

My first Scratch Disk has 105 GB of free space. My second Scratch Disk has
6.67 GB of free space.

Cache Levels: 8

I suspect that something is set wrong but I have no idea what it cold be.

What am I missing.

Dead in the water,

Dave

I’d check your windows virtual memory (the Windows "scratch disk") and I would also check to see if you need to defragment your hard drive(s).

Just the first things that spring to mind.

Also check your drive for errors. File system errors can cause erroneous disk full errors.

Thanks for thinking about my problem. I ended up taking a brute force approach, that worked!
First I moved the eight or so plug-in files that I had just added to my computer prior to this problem, into a temporary backup folder. I then deleted every file and folder in my Photoshop folder. I then went to my external Maxtor Hard Drive where I had made backup of my system on Aug 25.
I copied every folder from the Photoshop folder back into the above vacated Photoshop folder. I did not even reboot the system. I simply double clicked the PS icon and everything worked. I placed an order for anther 128MB of RAM. After I plug the additional RAM into my computer, I’ll dragged the files from the temporary folder back to where they were. The plug-in filter files only used about 6MB so the new 128MB will be more then enough. My old 800MHz will then be maxed out at 512MB memory. I suppose this must be near the minimum requirements for a PS 7.0 computer.

Some day I’ll buy a bigger/faster computer, but not this year.

Next time … try deleting your preferences before going to all that effort. It may just fix the problem.

Thanks, You probable are right. I made so many changes I don’t know WHAT fixed it!
Today I moved all the filters that I removed back into Photoshop. It’s working now. I’m not sure what happened, just glad to up and working once more.

A friend offered to sell me 256MB of RAM cheap. I took her up on the offer. More memory should help in general.
