Start with a 1 pixel high grayscale image whose width is 1/2 of your final image size. Use Filter>Noise>Add Noise at 50 percent. Resize the image to 1/2 the final height. This will give you clean random vertical lines. Add 20 percent noise, and resize to your final dimensions.

Start with a 1 pixel high grayscale image whose width is 1/2 of your final image size, and use Filter>Noise>Add Noise to add 50 percent noise. Resize the image to 1/2 the final height. This will give you a clean pattern, with random vertical lines. Then add 20 percent noise, and resize to your final dimensions.

Each channel value of each pixel gets a random number added to it, with the magnitude of the random number determined by the slider setting. Monochromatic noise adds the same value to each of the channels. Gaussian noise uses a bell shaped distribution for the random values. —
