PS Elements question about resolution and opening files

I’m familiar with PS7 and just now trying to use Elements (on my sister-in-law’s computer while I’m on vacation to deal with my Nikon digital photos) I brought my Nikon View disc and instead of loading PS7 on her computer, I brought the Elements disc I received when I bought my camera. I’ve never used Elements before, but it seems much the same as PS. So, I am using Nikon View and Elements.

My problem is when I use Elements (has no version #) to open a jpg saved from my digital camera to crop or otherwise alter the pic, it opens as 72 dpi. I will be having them printed, (just 5 x 7 snaps) and want to have them open at 300 dpi without my having to change the resolution each time because it’s a nuisance and it seems to degrade the photos a lot. I can’t seem to find how in help or preferences. How can I change the default for opening files?

I don’t have my PS with me, but I am sure my photos always open at 300 dpi at home using PS.

Thanks

Diane

I use Elements 1, but I think Diane has a misapprehension here. The print size is determined by the instructions sent to the printer, while the 72dpi is merely a resolution chosen by Photoshop to show the picture on the screen. It’s a convenient compromise.

If I go to Image | Size | I can change the size, but as long as I don’t have ‘resample’ ticked, all it does is show a different area on the screen, just as changing view does. So far I can see no way in which changing the 72dpi affects the saved image.

(Look at ‘auto’ on the resize menu and you’ll find a lower resolution, and a higher one of 266 dpi.)

Just tell to printer to print at 5 x 7 and you should be OK.

Thanks Michael,

Thanks for pointing out my misunderstanding. I did assume that Elements was converting the image to 72 dpi and was trying to fight against that.

Thanks again. I’ll just get these family vacation pics printed, say goodbye to my relatives and get back home to my familiar computer and PhotoShop 7.
