I have a few problems with Photoshop CS2 9.0.1 on Windows XP Pro SP2

Sometimes, when I open Photoshop, preferences are lost and back to default. This includes position and size of palettes, extra plugins folder, list of recent files, levels of history and basically all the settings in Preferences windows, but not custom brushes, actions, styles, etc.

The other problem is Photoshop sometimes freezes for a while. I have noticed these freezes are related with color palette issues. They happen when I Double click on the color boxes to create a new color, or when I use the color picker or ALT key with the paint tools, or simply when pressing "X" key to swap foreground and background colors. This doesn’t happens every time I try to change a color, but sometimes, normally the first time I use them or after a while using the program or when I return to Photoshop after using another program (but this is nether an exact rule. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not) so I suspect it has something to do with virtual memory.

Mi computer has an AMD ATHLON 64 3800+, 2 GB of RAM, about 100 GB of free hard disk (NTFS) and a gForce 7300 GS with 512 MB of video RAM on a PCI Express x16 with ForceWare 84.21, so I think it fits CS2 requirements by far.

If this helps, I have cache levels set to 6 and max memory use to 55%

Hi JW,
The first question in trouble shooting is always – Did it ever work properly? If it did, then for purposes of diagnostics you might consider disabling the acceleration for the video card.
Control panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Troubleshoot>Hardware Acceleration – tick
Also if there are any other things available to disable then disable them too.
If that does not do it then you might try to update your Directx driver or disable it all together.

Good luck,
Ron

I do not think it ‘s memory
if filters and other more memory intensive stuff work

mostly likely preferences folder got corrupted
this is the most common solution on NG so far
delete (better rename) preferences folder
on start it will recreate one
I think you can 3 finger salute on opening PS too to reset it to default
