Came across a few questions when using the Patch Tool in PS CS and WinXP.

The Patch Tool does not work in the Background layer. In the Patch Tool options bar, Source is selected and problem area is circled in the Background layer, but it can’t be dragged. This only works in a duplicated background layer. Why?

After a problem area is circled, the Use Pattern menu becomes active in the options bar. What is this menu for, and how to use it?

After dragging a circled area to a desired replacement area, the problem area (sometimes, but not always) becomes lighter than the desired replacement area. What is causing this tonal change, and how can the problem area be patched with an exact replacement area?

Thanks.
