Here’s one simple method that doesn’t really need a tutorial. Open the image
Make sure you’re in RGB mode
Make a new layer above the Background layer, set the layer mode to "color"
Choose a paint brush, use the ][ key to resize the brush Choose a color and paint away
Make a new layer for every color, adjust with the "opacity" settings. After 10 minutes of this, you’ll realize you need a pen; I suggest Wacom 🙂

????? mjh

It’s one of Dick Dastardly’s phrases
http://www.hotink.com/wacky/dastrdly/
aimed at his sweet (!) little dog, Muttley (and I just noticed the spelling in my sig is wrong, oops)

You already have the advice you need from others but if you want to factor in making selections with the pen tool and using paths, you can check out this .pdf:

http://www2.gol.com/users/poza/colorizing.pdf

It’s part of a course on using vectors but this chapter specifically deals with using them to colorize black and white pictures.

It’s a preliminary version but it may be helfpul to you.
