I find that my Microsoft brand optical mouse does not have a perfect release when I depress (unpress) the left button – causing a slight jump. This is especially noticeable if I am tired. Does anyone have a recommendation for a more accurate mouse? Are there special mouses that are dedicated to Photoshop? I’m thinking one with
copy/paste/undo buttons would be nice.

Thanks,
Ron

Ron,

For almost ALL work in PS, I use one of my Wacoms (without the mice), but have found a very good mouse, that is heavy (doesn’t move all around) and feels great in my hand – the Logitec Wireless. I got it with a new workstation, along with its companion keyboard. The keyboard was immediately retired, but I love that danged mouse and just have some loose wires hanging about. However, I still use the Wacom Intuos II on that workstation most of the time.

Hi Hunt,
I have never used a Wacom. I guess you’re talking about a digital pad with a stylus. Can that be used for placing vector anchor points and accurately adjusting the handles? What kind of Photoshop activities requires you to put aside the Wacom and use the mouse?

Thanks,
Ron

Wacom tablets are not particularly good for vector graphics, IMHO. There is always a pixel’s worth of jitter when you lift it. I also have a Logitech mouse, the MX-500. It is a wired version of the cordless Hunt mentioned in the previous article. Lots of programmable buttons I never use, and a very solid feel to it.

OK Microsoft will replace it free if you contact them, I do gaming and have broken a couple of the side buttons I over-used.
Make sure you have the correct driver for your mouse model !!!!!!! not the one that auto installs with win xp
it has lots of useful customizing options
you need to change the double click speed first to see if it’s a timing problem or if the mouse button is really broken physically there is an interface there to test the buttons too.
I use intellimouse explorer
logitech only makes one handed mice
for gaming I use it on my left hand so Logitech is useless to me I have small hands so the MS intellimouse is also good for me I like the extra side buttons for gaming but for PS I DISABLE them (programmable in the driver) becasue they are control and alt by default and in ps you don’t want to hit those unintentionally
For gaming you can set the buttons to any keys your game uses.

you get a wheel button and 2 side buttons in addition to the scrolling and the main two buttons
in the mouse interface you can choose a higher resolution control the speed of the mouse, and check your double click times an other choices

I got hubby the Logitech wireless keyboard (very nice except letters on keys are too tiny)
he did not care for the mouse and still uses the MS one
I hate batteries in a mouse, too heavy and feels very clunky to me, I do not want to have to go get a battery in middle of a game or work. A lot f guys I know prefer the heavier mouse

Razer is supposed to have the highest resolutions and best gaming mice

Thanks for the otherwise helpful advice but due its unfortunate proximity to the errant discharge of an unattended can of paint this mouse is not a candidate for return.

Let me guess – Japanese RPG.

Razer is supposed to have the highest resolutions and best gaming mice

I just purchased Illustrator so there will be no fancy pants mice around here for a while.

Thanks,

I bet you’re devilishly good. I’m a big fan of UT, and I actually bought the Logitech MX500 mouse for this purpose – it’s the only mouse I’ve bought that is rated in MHz.

I highly recommend Half Life 2, BTW, if you want to burn a few weeks worth of billable hours 🙂

Ron,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this.

Yes, the Wacom is a tablet with stylus and is a Godsend to me. It has been for fifteen years.

Yes, you can create Vector points and adjust the Handles, but I actually choose my mouse, as it moves more slowly across the tablet surface, or the mouse pad, than does the stylus. When in Vector mode, I’ll more often grab the mouse, but the stylus will work well too – I just like the extra friction for hitting the points/handles. Totally personal. That is about the only activity in PS, where I will grab the mouse, and then not always. In Painter, I almost never put the stylus down.

I also use the mouse for most Windows tasks and for work in almost all non- paint programs, though the stylus will do all of that. When in IE, or whatever browser you use, you might find that a multi-function mouse is a bit better, but with the Intuos III, that might have changed a bit – I only have up to Intuos II, so I do not know what all has been added, that might help out in IE, similar.

Yes, it is the tactile "feel" of that mouse, that I fell in love with. I gave Ron about the same answer, re: Vector graphics. Jitter and the lack of friction are hinderances to me. Others might not find these to be a problem, and I’ll often just keep the stylus working, if the Vector isn’t too intricate. Only problem that I have found with that Logitech cordless is that I forget to stick it back into its charging cradle, go out of town for a few weeks, and have to charge it back up! I’m sure that I will learn to put it to charge, but right now, I’ve forgotten a few times. No biggie, as the battery pack takes a charge in moments to get to work, then re-charges nicely very quickly. Still, I’ve had a dead mouse probably three times, already. Old dogs – new tricks…

I wondered why your last invoice seemed excessively high…

Heck, the last "gaming" interface stuff that I had was the old Thrustmaster controller, rudder and yoke. I think I still have those, but haven’t done any combat flying in years. Otherwise, my mice seem to keep me occupied with what gaming that I do. Hey, maybe I’ll load up some of those and see how the nVidia Quadro FX4500-512 handles them. Oh my, more unbillable hours.

Slick interface, but the upgrades are killer.

I have a cork from a bourbon bottle I can use. In fact I have some extras if it falls out.

Ron,

There are quite a few Doctors in Scottsdale, who do "implants," but I have yet to see an Intous version offered…

BTW, I think that when you do add a tablet, you will wonder how you ever managed without it.
