Unlinking a clipping group or whatever the heck it actually is

Thanks for all the help on my "Slowed to a crawl" posting – turns out my main problem was having really BIG files – several of them, with lots of layers – opened at the same time. I’ve been merging layers to speed things up – so far seems to be working.

Newest problem. Somehow two layers got linked, and I don’t mean with that little chain in the box next to the eyeball. The upper layer is a color overlay set to "multiply" to color in the b&w line drawing under it. The name of the line drawing layer in the pallette has an underline. I can’t do any other effects to that line drawing layer – somehow the linkage seems to have the layer locked.

I’m going thru my Quickstart book & can’t find the answer. FYI, there’s no little bug straddling the line between the two layers, which seems to be the indicator for a clipping group, so I guess this isn’t a clipping group (whatever that is). Any suggestions?

Hi Joe,

I doubt that you have found the problem with the performance of your machine – it sounds like you found a work-around. You mentioned using 64MB files. Maybe it’s just me but I would consider that a very small file. I have blank templates that are more than 64MB. I am new to Photoshop too but I doubt that it is uncommon to have thousands of layers in a document.

Good luck,
Ron

I don’t know what little bug you are talking about. Sounds like a Clipping Group to me. Is there a bent arrow pointing down on the upper layer? Alt-click on the line between the Layers.

Taking a second look at the QS book, it looks like that little bug is actually an icon representing a mouse click

Yes there is. It points down from the upper layer to the one underneath. The name of the layer underneath is underlined, which I’ve never seen before.

Alt-click on the line between the Layers.

That activates the top layer & a menu box pops up with choices "Layer Options / Blending Properties" etc.

Okay. You must have CS2. They must have changed something because it works as I said since ver 4. The arrow definitely indicates a Clipping Group. Are you sure you Alt-clicked right on the line? How about Layer>Release Clipping Group or Shift+Ctrl+G.
